From Engineering To American Football: How Data Can Help Maximize Team Performance

This presentation highlights the application of different sports science technologies available on campus to the football program at Florida State University. It touches on different aspects of a job of a sports scientist and an analyst at the FSU Seminoles football program including: 1) establishing a communication channel in between the staffs of the football coaching, strength and conditioning, athletic training and sports science departments; 2) utilizing GPS, accelerometry and sleep data to optimize performance and prevent injuries for individual athletes; and 3) video coding and getting raw data using ground level football film in order to predict athlete tendencies. All of these methods ultimately combine the data to maximize performance of individual athletes and the football team as a whole.
